Our Lord tells us what our lives should look like in Galatians 5:22-23. As believers in Jesus, we should have: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Why aren’t these lovely attributes called fruits of the Spirit? Because the word fruit in Galatians 5 is singular in the Greek denoting that they are not individual fruits but sections of a whole, like an orange. In our lives they are often blended together. Different theologians have called them components, segments, attributes, virtues, aspects, categories, divisions, graces, and facets.
While teaching the two to our year old Sunday School class for twenty-five years, the fruit of the Spirit was easy to illustrate. Much easier than experiencing in one’s own life. We need to relax and remember we don’t produce the fruit God does. But only in clean vessels who know His Word and apply it in their lives. I pray these Friday morning devotional blogs on the Fruit of the Spirit will help us draw closer to God.
